A Brief History of the College

Darjeeling Government College as it stands today since 5th August, 1948, has traversed a long way in serving the community. Darjeeling is very fortunate to have a government college of this stature and potentiality in this district town. The college is situated at the foot-hills of the eastern sub-Himalayan region at an altitude of 2134 meters. It stands on the Leblong Cart Road near the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. At the place where the college stands today in its full stature, previously stood St. Michael's School. A new Science and Geography block along with a new chamber of the Principal have been added to the existing structure without disturbing its original structural identity. ...more

Message from Principal

Truth (Satyam), Good (Shivam) and Beauty (Sundaram) nourish the entire social life. And every individual possesses the potential to endure any kind of challenge to generate a climate where he/she can work with positive attitude for maintaining equality, fraternity and liberty in our society.

In August 5th, 1948 this institution was established to educate the down pressed communities in such a remote area. The main purpose of educating the simple community has been to promote social, economic, educational and cultural progress of the people here in Darjeeling.

Since becoming Officer in Charge, I have felt very blessed as I have received support from many, including my family and friends, colleagues, students, parents and alumni. It is an honour to work with the team at Darjeeling Govt. College; I consider them family. The teaching faculty in my college, I believe, is one of the best I can meet anywhere. They not only teach minds, they also touch hearts and enliven spirits. They go beyond the call of duty to awaken the potential in their students.

I anticipate sincerely that students learning in this college shall develop the personality, career & character taking maximum benefit of the facilities this college offers to them. Be better citizen and glorify the reputation of this college.

Each Institute of Education has its own identity through its ethos, traditions. Parents should understand and evaluate this aspect, as our children will be influenced by what we stand for. We believe that all students are equal and must make their own mark within the community. The financial or social status of the parents is irrelevant. Each student's individuality should be respected and the student be taught to compete against himself or herself rather than against others. Good behavior must similarly be not to impress others but because it satisfies one’s own self respect.

Character training is fostered by the environment we create and the opportunities we offer. Students will be given the opportunity to handle responsibilities and also to accept responsibility for their personal actions, to acquire new skills and to make decisions for themselves.

Discipline must be based on example and self control because we at this college are involved not in the control of the masses but in individual development for leadership. Academic performance is paramount but equally important is the development of the intellect and well-honed skills of communication. We would desire that our students have an enquiring mind, a sense of social and moral values, a sense of service and compassion for those less fortunate, a respect for nature, tolerance, a sense of humour and the attributes to become good citizens of India and the world.
